DO’S AND DONT’S IN CHEMISTRY LAB

Activity on Chemistry laboratory safety rules is one of the regular chapters of Chemistry Department for B.Sc. I. During this session, Dr. Sugandha faculty of Chemistry Department included key points such as laboratory safety, clothing and equipment, flammable and combustible solvents, SDSs (safety data sheets), how to handle acids and bases, and precautions that should be taken while handling hazardous chemicals. We included information on different types of eye protection, gloves, shoes, lab coats, and other protective gear in her presentation. 
She also discussed handling flammable materials and the importance of covering containers and keeping them away from flame and other ignition sources. She showed how to dilute acids and bases and how to safely handle sodium metal. In addition, she also discussed hazards/accidents attributable to human error as well as electrical maintenance, proper storage of chemicals, GHS labeling of chemicals, and more.

LIBRARY ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

Library at the Institute offers an orientation program to the students and others in the beginning of every academic year. During this session library orientation programme was organized by the Department of Chemistry under the guidance of Librarian Mrs. Alka. Through this program, an effort is made to familiarize fresher’s (B.Sc. I & M.Sc. I) with the resources, services, facilities, rules, plagiarism checking services, journals and various library events  etc. offered by the Library and its use policies. Mrs. Alka also discussed the use of e-resources such as DELNET and LIBSYS. In addition, library has initiated focused discussions with research scholars in different disciplines.

ICE-BREAKING SESSION

Ice-breaking session is meant to being together for mutual benefits and so it was at our very first ice breaking session organized by M.Sc. II where seniors and juniors together with million smiles on their faces and enthusiastic hearts came together to interact and have fun organized by the Department of Chemistry. 
       The session started off with a brief address from Mrs. Sunita Khanna- Head of Department. That was an noon with a glimpse of joys, laughs and happiness.  At the end of the session, senior most faculty member Dr. Anju Gupta welcome all the fresher’s  and wish them good luck for their future.

Every year Department of Chemistry under the stewardship of Head of Department takes an initiative to provide books related to the subject to the needy and deserving students from the Departmental Library. About 200 books are issued every year to help the students so that they may not lack behind. A record was being maintained by Dr. Harleen Kaur in order to avoid loss of any books. This step is very favorable for the students and thus indeed makes the students pursue their studies.

WORLD OZONE DAY
16th September, 2019

Ozone or No zone,
Choice is yours”…

September 16th was designated by the United Nation general assembly as the international day for the preservation of ozone layer. The day is mainly intended to spread awareness of the depletion of ozone layer and search for solution to preserve it. People from all over the world are expected to gather on this day to join the talks and seminar.
The poster competition celebrated this theme which focused on global efforts to protect the ozone layer and address sustainability issues whilst highlighting those individuals and groups that actively participate in Ozone Layer protection by the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry. More than 100 students from different classes participated in the event.

CELEBRATION OF RASHTRIYA POSHAN MAAH
(National Nutrition Month, September 2019)
26th September, 2019

The Post Graduated Department of Chemistry in collaboration with other departments celebrated National Nutrition Week on 29th September, 2019 under Prime Minister’s overreaching scheme for holistic nourishment- POSHAN Abhiyaan is a multi- ministerial convergence mission with the vision to address malnutrition with a targeted approach by 2022.
Intra college competitions were organized on the themes, Hygiene and Sanitation and Reuse of plastic bottles in planting.

AIDS AWARENESS

World AIDS Day designated on 1st December every year since 1988 is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS caused by spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.
Post Graduate Department Of Chemistry organized a seminar to observe World AIDS Day on 18th Dec, 2019. Students of B.Sc. I participated to aware about causes, diagnosis and prevention of AIDS. Dr. Harleen Kaur hosted the seminar and guided the students about causes of this disastrous disease. She made aware the students to show harmony and concern to the AIDS affected patient. The seminar was very informative for the students.
The department actively participates in spreading awareness and believes that the future generation has the ability to sensitize others and prevent spread of HIV.

National Science Day

“Science is the Poetry of Reality”

National science day is celebrated in India on 28th February each year to mark the discovery of Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir C V Raman. The celebration includes public speeches, science movies, science exhibitions based on the themes and concepts, debate, quiz competitions, lectures and many more activities.
Postgraduate Department of Chemistry celebrated the National Science Day to memorize the contribution of great Scientist and Nobel Prize Winner Dr. C.V. Raman. The theme of the year was “Women in Science.” To celebrate the day Mrs. Neha Gupta and Mrs. Poonam Mehta organized the Quiz for the students of B.Sc. III on general science.
